Buyer MCP

Use Baton in your AI assistant

Connect your Baton buyer account to ChatGPT, Codex, Claude, or Muse. Then ask your assistant to find businesses for sale, compare them, save a shortlist, and read the data-room documents you already have access to on Baton.

What you can do

  • Search businesses for sale by industry, location, price, revenue, cash flow, and more.

  • Open the details of a listing: headline numbers, financial history, FAQs, lease terms, and market overview.

  • Compare two to four listings side by side.

  • Save a listing to your Baton account.

  • Review your saved listings and your activity on each listing.

  • See what to do next on a listing, such as completing your buyer introduction.

  • List and read the data-room documents you are allowed to see on Baton.

What stays on Baton

  • Creating your account and completing buyer setup.

  • Signing a listing's NDA.

  • Sending messages to advisors.

  • Making offers and everything after that.

Your assistant can tell you when a step must happen on Baton. It gives you a link to the right page.

Before you start

  • You need a Baton account with buyer access. Create one at baton.com if you do not have one.

  • Sign in with the method you already use: an email link, Google, or a password. You can set a password in your Baton account settings.

  • Only enter your Baton credentials on Baton's own sign-in page. Never paste a password or token into a chat.

Connect your assistant

Each assistant has its own install steps. The Baton sign-in and approval steps are the same for all of them.

ChatGPT and Codex

  1. Open the plugin directory in ChatGPT or Codex and search for Baton.

  2. Select Install, then Connect.

  3. Sign in on the Baton page that opens.

  4. If verification opens another tab, complete it there. Return to the original login tab to continue. If that tab is closed, restart the connection from the assistant.

  5. Review the approval screen. Choose read-only or read and write access.

  6. Select Allow access. You return to ChatGPT or Codex.

ChatGPT shows interactive listing cards, detail panels, and comparison tables where the surface supports them. Codex and other surfaces show the same information as text.

Claude

  1. Open Claude's connectors directory and search for Baton.

  2. Select Connect.

  3. Sign in on the Baton page that opens.

  4. Review the approval screen. Choose read-only or read and write access.

  5. Select Allow access. You return to Claude. Turn Baton on in the conversation if Claude asks.

Claude shows results as text and structured data. There are no interactive widgets in Claude.

Muse

  1. In Muse, open Settings, then Connectors, and select Baton.

  2. Sign in on the Baton page that opens.

  3. Review the approval screen. Choose read-only or read and write access.

  4. Select Allow access. You return to Muse.

  5. Muse asks you to approve tools before it uses them. Approve the ones you want.

Muse shows results as text and structured data. There are no interactive widgets in Muse.

The approval screen

Baton shows the approval screen every time an assistant asks for a new connection. Check these items before you allow access:

  • App. The name the assistant supplied. Baton has not verified that name.

  • Client ID and callback destination. Where Baton will send the connection.

  • Baton account. The account that will be connected. Sign out and sign in again if it is not yours.

  • Choose access. Read-only is selected by default when the assistant offers it.

Read-only access lets the assistant find and compare listings, read your saved listings and activity, and read data-room documents you can access. Read and write access also lets the assistant save listings for you.

Select Deny to stop. Denying does not change connections you approved earlier.

The approval screen expires after 10 minutes. If it expired, start the connection again from the assistant.

Example requests

  • "Use Baton to find profitable landscaping businesses in Texas under $1 million."

  • "Show me the next page of those results."

  • "Show the details for the second listing."

  • "Compare the first two listings on price, cash flow, and employees."

  • "Save the first one to my Baton account."

  • "Show my saved listings."

  • "What have I done so far on this listing, and what should I do next?"

  • "List the documents in this listing's data room."

  • "Read the profit and loss statement and summarize the last three years."

Your assistant turns your request into search filters. If it cannot find anything, try broader criteria. Listings sorted by price, revenue, cash flow, or multiple can be sorted up or down. Sorting by listing date is not available. Ask for listings "added in the last 30 days" instead.

Permissions

Access

What the assistant can do

Read-only

Search and compare listings. Read listing details. Read your saved listings, activity, and next steps. List and read data-room documents you can access.

Read and write

Everything above, plus save listings to your Baton account.

Permissions apply on top of your normal Baton access. Write access does not give the assistant access to a listing or document you could not open on Baton yourself.

If you approved read-only access and later want the assistant to save listings, start a new connection and choose read and write access. Baton never widens an existing approval on its own.

Listing information and privacy

  • Listing summaries can include financial history, FAQs, deal terms, employee counts, and lease information.

  • A missing value means the seller did not share it. It does not mean zero.

  • Private listings show a state-level location only. They never show a street address, city, postal code, or exact map pin.

  • Public listings can show an exact location when the seller approved it.

  • The connector returns saved listings and activity for the connected buyer account. It does not give another buyer access to your account.

Data-room documents

Signing an NDA happens on Baton, not in your assistant.

  1. Ask your assistant for the listing's documents. If you have not signed that listing's NDA, the assistant gives you a Baton link.

  2. Open the link, sign in if needed, and sign the NDA on Baton.

  3. Return to your assistant and ask again. The assistant lists the documents you can now see.

  4. Ask the assistant to read a document. Baton sends the file to your assistant.

Some data rooms are locked until the seller or advisor grants you access. Signing an NDA does not unlock a locked room. Request access on Baton when the assistant tells you to. Document access does not require a saved listing or an additional onboarding step. Normal Baton document permissions apply.

Limits:

  • The assistant sees exactly the documents you can see on Baton. Nothing more.

  • Baton checks your access every time the assistant lists or reads a document.

  • Files larger than 4 MiB cannot be read in the assistant. Open them on Baton.

  • Your assistant must support the file type to show its content. Supported types vary by assistant.

  • The assistant cannot upload, edit, or delete documents.

Disconnect, revoke, and reconnect

Disconnecting in the assistant and revoking on Baton are two different actions. Do both to be sure.

Revoke on Baton

  1. Open your Baton account settings and select Connected apps. Or go to api.baton.com/account/connections and sign in.

  2. Find the connection. Each approval is a separate connection, with its app name, permissions, and dates.

  3. Select Revoke access.

Revoking stops that connection immediately. Requests already in progress can finish. Other connections stay active. Revoking does not undo listings you already saved, and it does not delete information the assistant already received.

Disconnect in the assistant

Use the assistant's own settings to remove Baton. Some assistants tell Baton to revoke the connection when you do this. Check the Connected apps page on Baton to confirm.

Reconnect

Start a new connection from the assistant and approve access again. A revoked connection cannot be reactivated.

Connections expire 30 days after approval. Your assistant asks you to sign in again when that happens.

Common problems

What you see

What to do

The assistant asks you to sign in again.

Your connection expired or was revoked. Connect again from the assistant.

"This authorization request is invalid or has expired."

The approval screen timed out. Start the connection again from the assistant.

"Missing required scope … reconnect to Baton and approve this permission."

The assistant needs write access. Start a new connection and choose read and write access.

"Acknowledge this business's data-room NDA on Baton."

Open the link, sign the NDA on Baton, and ask again.

"Request access on Baton."

The data room is locked. Request access on Baton and wait for approval.

"Data room unavailable for this buyer."

This listing has no data room you can access.

"Document unavailable for this buyer."

The document is not in your permitted list. Ask the assistant to list the documents again.

"Document exceeds the 4 MiB MCP file limit."

Open the document on Baton instead.

"Document read was incomplete; please retry."

Ask again. Contact support if it keeps failing.

"Rate limited … Retry after N seconds."

Wait the number of seconds shown, then ask again.

"Invalid cursor."

Your earlier search changed. Start a new search.

A listing the assistant found earlier is gone.

The listing is no longer available to your account. Search again.

The assistant says a step must be completed on Baton.

Follow the link, complete the step, and ask the assistant to check again.

Limits

  • Search results come in pages of up to 20 listings.

  • Document lists come in pages of up to 20 documents.

  • Each buyer can make about 60 read requests and 10 save requests per minute. The assistant tells you how long to wait if you go over.

Your information

Your assistant receives the listing and account information you request. When you ask it to read a permitted document, Baton sends the actual document content to the connected provider. The provider's processing and retention rules apply to its copy.

Baton records tool activity linked to your account. Search records can include your search text, filters, sort order, page size, and result counts. Operational logs include account and listing identifiers and errors. The connector does not request full chat history. Text sent as a search query can be recorded.

OpenAI widgets can request listing images from Baton image hosting and map resources from Google services. Those services receive the associated browser requests.

Revoking a connection stops future access. It does not delete existing analytics, saved listings, or information the provider already received. Baton's privacy policy applies.
